Whats the right car insurance for you???

Just like the tyres on your car, it is vitally important that your car insurance is fit for the car you drive.

With so many car insurance policy options available online, it can be daunting to find the best car insurance for you - to suit your car, your driving habits and your lifestyle. Premiums can vary widely too, so you need to be sure that you’re getting not only the right type of insurance but also the most competitively priced!

Here are a few pointers to help you along the road to finding the right cover for you.

Types of Car Insurance

There are three basic types of car insurance available offering different features and benefits. These are Third Party, Third Party Fire and Theft or Comprehensive insurance (sometimes called fully comprehensive). The type of insurance cover you choose will depend on how much value you place on your car and how important it is to your day to day life.

Third Party Only Car Insurance

Third Party car insurance is the cheapest, most basic type of car insurance available. It gives you the minimum level of cover to allow you to legally drive your car. If your car is involved in an accident, your car insurance policy will only pay out the cost of repairs to the other person or person’s car or property that was damaged as a direct result of your car accident. Many insurers in the UK will not insure new cars with this type of insurance.

Third Party Fire and Theft Car Insurance

This type of insurance provides a similar level of cover to Third Party Only but will also pay out if your car is stolen or destroyed by fire.

Comprehensive Car Insurance

Comprehensive car insurance covers you for damage to third party property and fire & theft as well as accidental damage to your own car.

Cheap Car Insurance

With all the costs of running a car, there is the temptation to just buy the cheapest car insurance price you can find and not worry about the details. Sometimes cheapest can represent good value but you will not know this until, for instance, you have to make a claim and find out just how good the service of your car insurance company is and how quickly they get you back on the road. However you do not need to take such a risk to get a really competitive premium – just make sure that you are only buying, and paying for, the cover you really need. For instance, cover for taking your car abroad, protecting against legal costs, breakdowns and courtesy cars, are often included in a policy automatically but many people do not realise that they are paying for extras they are unlikely to use. A recent survey showed that one in two drivers pay for European cover they never use and many motorists have no need of a courtesy car.

Breakdown Cover

Many car insurers offer a breakdown recovery service as an extra to your car insurance policy. If your car breaks down, they will either attempt to repair your car at the roadside, this can include replacing a broken windscreen, replacing punctured tyres or helping you fit your spare tyre. If your car cannot be fixed at the roadside, they can tow your car to a garage or your chosen destination.

European Car Insurance cover

If you are planning on driving your car abroad then you might find that you need to upgrade your insurance policy to give you the same level of cover in Europe as you enjoy in the UK.

Insurance and the way you use your car

The way you use your car e.g. how many miles you drive each year, if your car is regularly parked on the road overnight or kept in a garage or driveway and what you use your car for will also affect the price of your car insurance policy. The general principle is that the less you use your car, the less likely you are to have an accident. If your car is regularly parked on your driveway or in your garage, it is less likely to be hit and damaged by a passing vehicle.

If you just use your car for normal day-to-day driving, such as commuting to work, shopping or to visit family and friends then you only need cover for “Social, Domestic and Pleasure.” However, if you use your car for your business then you will need Business Class cover which will cost a little more.
